Tooth Extraction

Extraction or removal of the tooth may be needed due to these common reasons:

  1. Infection of the tooth that can no longer be saved with a root canal. Decay has several stages before the stage of “extraction”, first stage can be saved with a filling while its still on the enamel. Decay is drilled out and a medication is put in. Second stage involves the decay infecting the root of the tooth and gum, if the tooth is still savable with a root canal treatment, the dentist suggests saving it rather than extracting or removing that tooth. If it can no longer be saved, the dentist extracts the tooth and places a dental implant.
  2. Gum disease is the most common reason of losing a tooth. The tooth starts loosening due to damaged surrounded ligaments and bone.
  3. Severe trauma where the tooth cannot be saved with cosmetic solution such as dental crown or dental veneer.
  4. Crowding of the teeth which prevents adult teeth to grow in a healthy environment.

Extraction of the teeth do not cause any pain, patients barely feel anything but a tiny pressure. That is why extractions do not require the patients to be fully sedated under the hands of an awesome dentist Dr Bennett. Instead, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the area surrounding the extraction site. Once the extraction is completed, self-dissolving stitches will be applied if necessary, although they usually are not needed as the gums will clot on their own. Dr Bennett will prescribe painkillers and antibiotics after the extraction and the patients will just need keep up with good hygiene.
